Image discovery is more than choosing a decorative picture. A relevant image, useful nearby words and technically accessible markup all help people understand the page. A publisher's image strategy should start with accurate content, not promises about automated rankings.
Start with a meaningful image
Use a real product photograph, an original illustration, or a diagram that genuinely adds context. Choose image dimensions appropriate for mobile and desktop. Compress carefully, retain detail, and serve artwork from a stable crawlable URL.
Write supporting text that helps people
- Use a descriptive filename such as
singapore-marketing-illustration.svginstead ofimage-final3.svg. - Write concise alt text reflecting the image's purpose. Decorative images may be given empty alt text.
- Place a relevant heading and caption near substantive visuals.
- Consider a representative
og:imagefor social previews, without claiming social platforms will always use it. - Reserve image width and height to reduce layout movement.
Review actual multimodal search reporting
Google announced web multimodal Search performance reporting on 24 September 2026. Where the feature appears in your verified Search Console property and eligible traffic exists, the report can help distinguish searches involving visual input such as Lens, Circle to Search or image upload. Treat this as reporting evidence, not a guaranteed traffic source.
