Campaign URLs are easy to create and surprisingly easy to mislabel. A quick review before publishing can keep newsletter, partner and social referrals organised without needing access to an analytics account.
Inspect the destination first
Make sure your link points to the intended https:// landing page, preserves legitimate query parameters and retains its fragment if you need one. Do not place personal information, email addresses or sensitive details inside the URL.
Review your essential campaign keys
The usual minimum set is utm_source (where the visitor came from), utm_medium (what type of channel it is) and utm_campaign (the initiative). Optional utm_content can distinguish a creative variation and utm_term can provide keyword context.
?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumn_readers makes campaign meaning clear and uses consistent lowercase names.Look for duplicates and naming drift
A URL containing two utm_source values is ambiguous. Values such as Newsletter and newsletter can split reporting. Establish a small naming convention and use it consistently across the team.
Do not misuse internal links
UTM parameters are generally for inbound campaigns, not links between your own pages. Analytics reporting also depends on whether measurement is enabled, consent, blockers and attribution settings. A tagged URL is not proof of a recorded session.
